Not the Ghost of Mama Cass, but...

Kathy and I just came back from a luncheon "finishing party" at the newly refurbished Cass House in Cayucos.

Wow! The finale of a 14 year rehab project was celebrated today with the addition of the last two copper, very pointy, finials added to the roof of this house built in 1867 by Captain James Cass, legendary steam ship captain, entrepeneur that nearly single handedly started up commerce in Cayucos, California in the late 1800's.

There's a lot of history is this old house and there's lots of good deli food being made next store in the eight month old "Small Market." The same folks that will be serving breakfast, lunch and California tea (afternoon wine), in the Cass House Restaurant which is open to the public.

You're right, Cliff, Cass House is a wonderful piece of local history brought back to life. I loved their little deli which provided a delicious lunch for us. I especially liked the vegetarian panini and the housemade hummus. And it provides a unique little gourmet market for the community with its selection of good local wines, Hush Harbor bread and farmstead cheeses. They also plan to open to the public for breakfast and high tea rather than just limit it to inn guests. Of course, we'll have to ask you, Cliff, to tell us about the chocolate chip cookies!

I overheard lots of cookie reviews. Most of which went something like, "Mmmmmmmmm. Yuuummm. Mooof."
But,alas that was one of the treats I didn't try. Like you, Kathy, I loved the veggie panini on that wonderful Hush Harbor bread.
btw, Hush Harbor Bakery is in the Virginia Square center in Atascadero; a block or so north of the Carlton Hotel on the same side of the street.
